What to Look for in a Quality AR Rifle
When shopping for a high-quality AR-platform rifle to add to your
collection, there are certain features you might want to seek out. Each
of these features is the mark of a high-quality build. Whether it’s a
free-floating handguard on your M4 carbine or ambidextrous controls, the right parts and features usually indicate you’ve got a premium quality AR in your sights.
Free-Floating Handguard
Free-floating handguards cost more to make and require a strong
connection to the main part of the upper receiver. This means they have
to be higher quality than the typical handguard, or they would break off
or not support accessories. But that’s not even the part that makes a
free-floating handguard worthy of a high-quality AR. The whole reason
they are on a premium M4A1
is because of barrel harmonics. Because the handguard doesn’t touch the
barrel, it doesn’t affect the harmonics of the barrel when you fire a
shot. This directly translates to better accuracy.

Ambi Controls
How can you tell a high-quality PCC 9MM
apart from a lower-quality 9MM AR? One way is the controls. A fully
ambi lower means you have the same ergonomics and controls whether you
shoot right- or left-handed. From the safety selector to the mag release
or even the charging handle, ambi controls are the mark of a quality
rifle. Plus, it’s easy to hand to your range buddies so they can try
your top-quality rifle, no matter their dominant shooting hand.
Cold Hammer Forged Barrels
Cold hammer forged barrels are a step above typical barrels. They take
longer to make and are more expensive, requiring special forges that
create intense hydraulic pressure. However, the end result is hard to
argue with. They are more accurate and durable than the typical barrel.
You can shoot more rounds through them and stay accurate before needing
to replace the barrel.
Flared Magwells
In years gone by, it was rare to have a flared magazine well out of the
box. Instead, AR lowers used the same mag well that’s been around for
decades. High-quality rifles, however, will feature a widened and
beveled magwell, helping to funnel a magazine into place. It makes for
faster, more secure reloads, so you can keep your eyes down range as you
reload. When at a competition and even fractions of a second matter,
being able to reload faster can be the difference between a win and a
loss.
Built-In QD Points
Chances are
you’ll want to attach a two-point sling somewhere, either on the
handguard or at the base of the handguard, and either at the castle nut
or on the stock. Having an integrated quick-detach point at even one of
these places can help you easily get your sling set up and ready to go
right out of the box. This saves you the work of installing one yourself
and shows that the manufacturer cares about your experience with their
rifle.
