3 Tactical Drills for Moving and Shooting
Being able to move and shoot accurately is a much different skill than
firing from a fixed position. You need to be able to transition from
targets while moving, all while maintaining accuracy with your MK12 rifle.
If you’re hoping to start shooting competitively, it’s a skill you need
to master. Here are some drills to help you get started.
The Stick Drill
The first drill will help train your footwork and only requires two
targets and a yardstick. Start between 7 and 10 yards away from the
target. Lay the yardstick on the ground, parallel to the target, and
stand behind it. On the signal, draw your striker fired 1911,
put two rounds in the first target, and then two rounds in the second.
You should do all of this while stepping over the stick. It should be a
single, continuous movement. Your first step should be on the draw, and
you should finish in the same position you started, but in front of the
stick. Repeat the drill, but start in front of the stick and move
backward on your first step.
Repeat the back and forth a few
times. Then, rotate the stick. Instead of forward and backward, do the
same drill with lateral movements. You can even combine all of them into
one eight-shot drill.
The Square Drill
Now it’s time to move around a bit more, but still in a predictable
pattern. The Square Drill requires a single target and something to mark
four points. The original drill uses traffic cones, but use whatever
you have handy at the range.
Arrange your markers in a
10-foot-wide box, with the side closest to the target placed 5 yards
away. Start in any corner and walk clockwise around the perimeter of the
box. The goal is to hit the target with two rounds from each side
without stopping. Vary the drill by changing the number of rounds in
your magazine or the minimum number of shots per side. Next, try the
entire drill but moving in the opposite direction.

Figure 8 Drill
Now it’s time to start moving a bit more fluidly, as you would in a
competition scenario. Grab two of your markers and place them 3 yards
apart, 10 yards from the target. Combining the Stick and Square drills,
make a figure 8 around the two markers.
Start with your PCC 9MM
in the low-ready position. As soon as you start walking, bring it up,
and fire 10 shots at a controlled pace, ending as you finish your 8. The
goal is to have all shots in a target that is about 11 inches tall and 6
inches wide, which can be fairly difficult and can really sharpen your
skills.
