3 Drills to Test Your Skills at Your Next Range Day

Do you want to improve your shooting skills? Whether you’re a novice shooter just trying to be more accurate or an experienced shooter looking to take the next step, these drills will put your skills to the test at your next range day. Grab your PCC 9MM, set up your targets, wait for the shot timer, and get ready to test your speed, accuracy, and basic mechanics.

The DOPE Drill

The DOPE Drill takes the popular Bill Drill to the next level. It can help you calculate your “hit factor,” combining speed and accuracy, which are two things every marksman could improve upon. Start by marking every 5 yards between 5 and 25 from the target.

Start at the 5-yard mark and hit the A zone of an IPSC target at the beep. A-zone hits are worth 5 points, C is 3, and D is 1. Miss and lose 10 points. After the first shot, record your time and repeat at each 5-yard mark. Add up your times and points, divide by the total time, and you have your hit factor.

1-Reload-1

This next drill is all about reload speed and target reacquisition. You should be able to hit a shot, reload, and hit another shot in one seamless motion. Load your striker fired 1911 with straight-pull trigger with a single round and an empty mag. At the beep, draw your handgun from a holster and hit a target placed 7 yards away. Reload with another mag, also loaded with a single shot, and hit the target again.

If you want to make it more challenging, have someone load different amounts of ammo into the mags. You won’t know when you have to reload, working on both your reloading skills, your speed, and your accuracy.

The Dot Torture Drill

This is about pure accuracy. No second chances; you either hit the dot or you start over. You need discipline and concentration for the Dot Torture Drill. Your goal is accuracy and trigger control.

Place a target with several one-inch diameter dots at 3 to 5 yards. Your goal is to fire your MK12 long range rifle at all of the dots, using only one shot per dot, without breaking stance or line of sight. When that is too easy, move the target back a yard or two. You can even do a different exercise per dot, such as slow fire, rapid fire, or shooting from your weak side.
