3 Firearm Drills You Can Do at Home

Sometimes you just can’t get out to the range, but you still want to set aside some time to improve your firearm skills. Whether your go-to rifle is a Block 2 M4 or something else, there are a few dry-fire exercises that will improve your skills and make a difference the next time you hit the range. From practicing reloading to target acquisition, here are a few to consider.

Reloading

One of the easiest skills you can practice at home is reloading. You can even do it on carpet, letting you freely drop mags without fear of damaging them. If you have an AR-platform gun like a 9MM PCC with ambidextrous controls, you can practice reloading from both strong and off hands. Drop the mag, grab a new one, and slam it home. Even if your reloads are already fluid and quick, it doesn’t hurt to practice, so try this drill whenever you have a few moments to spare. Just make sure the magazines are 100% empty.

Dry Firing

If you’re already practicing reloading your M4 carbine, you might as well practice dry firing with snap caps. Dry firing helps train you not to blink or flinch when you squeeze the trigger, since there is no bang while dry firing. It can also help improve your technique, ensuring you squeeze the trigger properly with just enough pressure. Dry fire, drop a mag, load a new one, charge the bolt, dry fire, and keep repeating.

Target Acquisition

Target acquisition is another skill you can do from the comfort of home. Tape a few targets up on a few different walls, and practice bringing your rifle up. Make sure you have a clear sight picture and either have the iron sights lined up or your optic of choice on target. Drop to the ready position, choose another target, and repeat. For a challenge, have someone else call out the targets, so you don’t know which one is next.
