3 Ways to Modify Range Drills
Are your drills at the range starting to feel too easy? Have you gotten used to shooting your Block 2 M4
and want to increase the intensity of your drills to make you a better
overall shooter? Whether you’re competing soon or just trying to improve
your skills, there are a few ways you can modify your drills to make
them more challenging.
Add In Reloads
Instead of using a full mag and finishing the drill, you want to
introduce interruptions. The easiest way to do that is to add in
reloads. Purposefully load in only a couple of rounds to force yourself
to reload. This also helps train your muscle memory so you can reload
faster. Many drills focus on these reloads, but introducing them to
other drills with a new focus can force you to adapt. If you really want
to add a challenge, have someone else load the rounds, so you won’t
know how many rounds are in the mag before you need to reload.

Use Your Off-Hand
Many newer firearms come standard with ambidextrous controls. You might pick up a 9MM PCC,
and you can release the bolt or mag from either side. This can be handy
when you try shooting with your off-hand. It can be a challenge to hold
the gun in your opposite hand, but it might be required in some
competition settings. You never know when you’ll need to shoot with your
off-hand, so add it to your training routine.

Simulate Malfunctions
Simulating malfunctions has a few benefits. First, if a malfunction
happens while you are at the range, you will know how to clear it
safely. At a competition, knowing how to clear a malfunction quickly can
keep you in the game instead of costing you precious time. Simulating
this is easy enough, as you can just put a round between the bolt and an
AR15 upper receiver.
