4 Tips for Getting More Out of Your AR15’s Rail System
A rail system is a great thing to have on a firearm. Rail systems
allow you to easily add accessories and are a standard feature on the
AR15 platform. Rifles with a free-floating rail system, like the M4 carbine, are exceptionally versatile right out of the box.
You can also find rail systems integrated into AR10 rifles and variations of the pistol caliber carbine (PCC). If you have a gun with a rail system, have you taken full advantage of it? Here are a few tips to help you get more out of your rifle’s rail.
Be Sure to Use Compatible Mounts
There are different mounting systems on the market, including Picatinny rails and proprietary systems. When buying mounts and rail accessories, you want to ensure you get compatible gear.
Incompatible mounts may require constant adjusting or overtightening to work properly, which can damage the rail, the mount, or both. There’s a lot of cross-compatibility, but you want to keep this in mind as you add third-party mounts or accessories to your gun.
Take Advantage of Cross-Compatible Rail Systems
Because there is some cross-compatibility among rail systems, you may be able to share AR15 accessories and gear across different firearms in your gun safe. For example, if you have a 9MM PCC with a rail system, you may be able to use your AR15 accessories with that PCC.
This can be a great option if you don’t want to reinvest in the same or similar accessories for your PCC but still would like to use certain gear with that gun. It’s a great way to save money and make the most of your firearms!
Use Offset Mounts
Offset mounts can be a simple way to get even more use out of your
rifle’s rail system. If you’re using multiple sighting systems on your Block 2 M4 carbine, for example, 45-degree offset mounts make it easy to integrate each of those systems into your setup.
Invest in Rail Covers
Rail covers are a simple way to protect exposed sections of your
rifle’s rails. This can help minimize potential damage when using your
rifle in rugged situations. It’s also a more comfortable option for
gripping the rail section of your rifle too!
